The
term Limousine covers large, luxury cars. So
limousines can be for 2 to 4 passengers. Mercedes
Benz call all their large cars limousines. They
built limousines all the time, either Short or
Long wheel base types. In the early 1900's a
Mercedes Benz client needed a new limousine to go
the races, his wife needed to enter and exit the
car with a very large hat, on visiting the factory
to see how the car was developing, it was
discovered that the door was to small. So a
Mercedes-Benz engineer called Binz stretched the
limousine to include a bigger door, hence the term
"Stretched Limousine". This concept now
has many variations. The most obvious type of
stretched limousine is the 4 door type. Normally
the passenger enters the car by the back door.
Inside the seating can be for 4-7 passengers, in
this type of limousine, the seats face each other,
this a called a "Conference Seated"
limousine. Also available are
8 passenger limousines,
in this type of limousine the seating is for 3
passengers across the back seat of the car and a
long bench seat along the car for 5 passengers,
this is called "J Seated". The other
type popular in Ireland is the 6 door limousine,
In this type of limousine all the passengers and
seats face forward, with the centre row of seats
being flip up seats, hence it name an
"Occasional Seated" Limousine, they are
usually shorter then the 4 door type, and are
often finished in Black.
